Ingredients

Main Ingredients (1 serving)

  • Ground Pork and Beef 100g
  • Onion 1/8 to 1/4 pc
  • Egg 1 pc
  • Vegetable Oil 1 tbsp
  • Carrot 1/4 pc
  • Cucumber 1/4 pc
  • Cooked Rice (to taste)

Seasonings

  • Salt (to taste)
  • Pepper (to taste)
  • [A] Mirin (Sweet Rice Wine) 1 tbsp
  • [A] Cooking Sake (Rice Wine) 1 tbsp
  • [A] Soy Sauce 2 tsp
  • [A] Tomato Ketchup 1 tbsp
  • [B] Sugar 1 tbsp
  • [B] Salt 1/3 tsp
  • [B] Vinegar 1 tbsp
  • [B] Water 1 tbsp
  • Pepper (optional)
  • Water 1 tbsp

Steps

  1. Chop cucumber (1/4 pc) and carrot (1/4 pc) into bite-sized pieces.
  2. Place the chopped cucumber and carrot in a bowl, and mix with [B] Sugar (1 tbsp), [B] Salt (1/3 tsp), [B] Vinegar (1 tbsp), and [B] Water (1 tbsp).
  3. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and microwave.
  4. Finely chop onion (1/8 to 1/4 pc).
  5. Add ground pork and beef (100g), the chopped onion, and a small amount of the egg white from egg (1 pc) to a bowl and mix. Key Tip: Using only egg white as a binder for the hamburg steak saves time. By using the remaining egg yolk and white for a fried egg, you get a perfectly sized fried egg for your bento.
  6. Add salt (to taste), pepper (to taste), and water (1 tbsp) to the hamburg steak mixture and mix.
  7. Knead the mixture thoroughly until smooth.
  8. Lightly grease your hands with vegetable oil and shape the hamburg steak mixture into flat circles.
  9. Heat vegetable oil (1 tbsp) in a frying pan, and place the shaped hamburg steaks without indenting the center. Sear until golden brown.
  10. Move the hamburg steaks to one side of the pan, and crack the egg yolk and remaining egg white into the empty space to make a fried egg.
  11. Add a small amount of water to the frying pan, cover with a lid, and steam the hamburg steaks and fried egg. Key Tip: Ensuring the yolk is fully cooked provides peace of mind when packing for a bento.
  12. Place cooked rice (to taste) into the bento box. Key Tip: Let the rice cool slightly before packing.
  13. If the frying pan used for the hamburg steak is messy, lightly wipe it clean. Add [A] Cooking Sake (Rice Wine) (1 tbsp), [A] Mirin (Sweet Rice Wine) (1 tbsp), [A] Soy Sauce (2 tsp), and [A] Tomato Ketchup (1 tbsp), mix, and simmer until thickened. Key Tip: Adding soy sauce to ketchup creates a Japanese-style flavor.
  14. Place the hamburg steak on top of the rice and pour the prepared sauce over it. Key Tip: Let the sauce cool before pouring.
  15. Place the fried egg on top of the hamburg steak.
  16. Arrange the microwaved pickles around the hamburg steak. Key Tip: Making the pickles the night before saves time.
  17. Sprinkle with pepper (optional) to finish.
