Kou Kenteetsu presents a 5-minute lettuce stir-fry with oyster sauce. The crisp texture and rich, savory sauce perfectly complement rice, making this dish disappear in no time. It's also a great way to use up leftover lettuce!

Ingredients

Main Ingredients (2 servings)

  • Lettuce 1/2 head
  • Bacon 1-2 slices
  • Grated Garlic 1 clove

Seasonings

  • [A] Oyster Sauce 2 tsp
  • [A] Soy Sauce 2 tsp
  • Sesame Oil 1 tbsp
  • Coarsely Ground Black Pepper (to taste)

Steps

  1. Cut out the tough core of the lettuce in a V-shape.
  2. Wash the lettuce thoroughly.
  3. Tear the washed lettuce leaves into bite-sized pieces.
  4. Separate the tough base of the lettuce from the leaves and thinly slice it against the grain.
  5. Combine the torn lettuce leaves and the sliced base. Add grated garlic (1 clove) and mix briefly to distribute the garlic flavor throughout. This is a key step to ensure the garlic flavor permeates the lettuce, which cooks quickly.
  6. Thinly slice 1-2 slices of bacon.
  7. Heat 1 tbsp of sesame oil in a frying pan and add the sliced bacon.
  8. Sauté the bacon until it renders its flavor.
  9. Increase heat to high. Add the lettuce while it still has some moisture, coating it with the bacon's flavor and oil. This is a key step: keeping some moisture on the lettuce ensures a crisp texture.
  10. Add the sauce mixture of oyster sauce and soy sauce ([A] Oyster Sauce 2 tsp, [A] Soy Sauce 2 tsp).
  11. Stir-fry briefly over high heat. Turn off the heat once the lettuce begins to wilt.
  12. Plate the stir-fry and generously sprinkle with coarsely ground black pepper (to taste), if desired.
