Perfect for summer! Two side dish recipes: an easy, no-cook microwave bell pepper namul and a flavorful pan-fried bell pepper namul that's perfect with rice. Recommended for those who want to use up bell peppers deliciously.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients (2 servings)
- 3 bell peppers (for microwave namul)
- 3 bell peppers (for pan-fried namul)
Seasonings
- 2 tsp soy sauce (for microwave namul)
- 2 tsp sesame oil (for microwave namul)
- (to taste) toasted white sesame seeds (for microwave namul)
- (a pinch) vinegar (for microwave namul)
- 1 tbsp sesame oil (for pan-fried namul)
- (a pinch) grated garlic (for pan-fried namul)
- 1 tsp soy sauce (for pan-fried namul)
- (to taste) toasted white sesame seeds (for pan-fried namul)
Steps
- Make the microwave bell pepper namul. Cut the 3 bell peppers into slightly large pieces, keeping the stems and seeds intact.
- Place the cut bell peppers in a heatproof bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and microwave.
- After microwaving, wipe away any excess moisture.
- In the bowl, combine the microwaved bell peppers with 2 tsp soy sauce, 2 tsp sesame oil, toasted white sesame seeds to taste, and a pinch of vinegar if desired. Mix well. [Here's the trick!] Letting it sit for a bit allows the flavors to meld and makes it even more delicious.
- Next, make the pan-fried bell pepper namul. Cut the other 3 bell peppers in half lengthwise, keeping the stems and seeds, then thinly slice diagonally.
- Heat sesame oil in a frying pan and add the thinly sliced bell peppers, including the stems and seeds, to stir-fry.
- Stir-fry until they are slightly charred and softened. [Here's the trick!] The seeds and membranes are also delicious.
- Once the bell peppers have softened, turn off the heat. Add a pinch of grated garlic, 1 tsp soy sauce, and toasted white sesame seeds to taste, then mix well. [Here's the trick!] Garlic and soy sauce pair wonderfully with bell peppers.
