An easy and budget-friendly arrangement using leftover mochi and tofu from New Year's. These 'round mochi tofu' bites are crispy on the outside and melt-in-your-mouth tender on the inside. Made with minimal ingredients, they're a cost-effective recipe that's ready in just minutes by mixing and pan-frying. Enjoy this savory dish with chopped green onions, similar to agedashi tofu.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients (2 servings)

  • Mochi (rice cakes) 2 pieces
  • Green onions 2 stalks
  • Tofu 1/2 block (150g)
  • Potato Starch 2 tbsp

Seasonings

  • Mayonnaise 1 tbsp
  • Dashi granules 1 tsp
  • Soy Sauce
  • Dashi broth

Steps

  1. In a bowl, combine 1/2 block (150g) of tofu and 1 tbsp of mayonnaise. Mix with a whisk until it becomes a paste.
  2. Add 2 tbsp of Potato Starch and 1 tsp of dashi granules to the tofu paste and mix well.
  3. Finely chop 2 stalks of green onions and add them to the bowl, then mix.
  4. Cut 2 pieces of mochi into 12 equal pieces each and add them to the bowl, then mix.
  5. Heat about 5mm to 1cm of oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
  6. Once the oil is hot, scoop the mixed ingredients with a spoon, form them into round shapes, and place them in the frying pan. Cook over medium to medium-high heat, being careful not to burn.
  7. After about 3 minutes, once the bottom is browned, flip them over.
  8. After about 6 minutes, once they are browned all over, remove them from the pan and drain the excess oil.
  9. Arrange them on a plate after draining. Serve with Soy Sauce or Dashi broth to your liking.
  10. 【The Key to Success!】 Mashing the tofu into a paste ensures the ingredients bind together firmly, resulting in a crispy exterior and a chewy, melt-in-your-mouth interior. They are also delicious dipped in dashi broth, similar to agedashi tofu.
