A quick and easy recipe for skewers made with new onions and pork loin, using toothpicks instead of bamboo skewers. Fried with minimal oil, the sweetness of the new onions and the juiciness of the pork will fill your mouth. A crispy and delicious dish perfect as an appetizer or for bento boxes.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients (2 servings)

  • New Onion 1/2 (approx. 120g)
  • Thick-cut Pork Loin 1 slice (approx. 120g)
  • Egg 1
  • All-purpose Flour 3 tbsp
  • Panko Breadcrumbs (to taste)
  • Toothpicks
  • Frying Oil

Seasonings

  • Salt (to taste)
  • Pepper (to taste)
  • Water 1 tbsp
  • Sauce (to taste)
  • Sweet Miso (to taste)

Steps

  1. Peel the skin off half a new onion and trim off any dirty parts from the root end.
  2. Score the new onion crosswise, and insert 12 toothpicks to divide it into 12 pieces. (Key tip!) If the onion is small and difficult to skewer, reduce the number of toothpicks to 10 for easier handling.
  3. Cut between the toothpicks with a knife to divide the new onion into 12 pieces.
  4. Cut 1 thick slice of pork loin into 12 pieces.
  5. Gently push the new onion on the toothpick slightly further in, then skewer the pork onto the tip and shape it. (Key tip!) If the onion pieces are falling apart, re-skewer them to reshape.
  6. Sprinkle salt and pepper all over the skewered new onion and pork.
  7. In a bowl, combine 1 egg and 1 tbsp water. Whisk the egg and mix well.
  8. In a shallow cup or bowl that can fit the ingredients, add 3 tbsp all-purpose flour. Gradually add the whisked egg, stirring to create a smooth batter without lumps. (Key tip!) Using a cup makes it easier to coat the ingredients. If the batter level gets low, tilt the cup and gather the batter to coat evenly.
  9. Spread panko breadcrumbs on a tray or flat plate.
  10. Hold the skewer and dip the ingredients into the batter, letting excess drip off, then coat thoroughly with panko breadcrumbs.
  11. In a frying pan, heat a generous amount of frying oil to a depth of about 3mm over medium heat.
  12. Test if the oil is hot enough by dropping a small piece of breadcrumb. Once hot, carefully place the coated ingredients in the pan and fry.
  13. After about 2 to 2.5 minutes, once the bottom side is golden brown, flip them over and fry the other side.
  14. After about 5 to 6 minutes, when the entire pieces are golden brown, remove them from the oil and drain excess oil.
  15. Once drained, arrange them on a plate.
  16. Serve with your favorite condiments such as sauce or sweet miso.
