A recipe for the 'Ultimate Onion Rings' with a crispy exterior and fluffy interior, made using Hokkaido Furano Hop Sparkling Water. The batter made with sparkling water stays crispy even after time, and the refreshing aroma of hops enhances the flavor. An easy snack that pairs perfectly with highballs.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients (2-3 servings)

  • Onion 1 (200g)
  • Cake flour 35g
  • Potato starch 35g
  • Hokkaido Furano Hop Sparkling Water 60cc
  • Mayonnaise 1 and 1/2 tsp

Seasonings

  • Salt 2g (1/3 tsp)
  • Garlic powder 7 shakes
  • Aji-no-moto 7 shakes
  • Pepper 4 shakes
  • Vegetable oil (enough to cover the bottom of the pan by 1cm)
  • Ajishio (seasoned salt) to taste
  • Ketchup to taste (for flavor variation)
  • Mayonnaise to taste (for flavor variation)

Steps

  1. Cut off the root and stem ends of the onion.
  2. Slice the onion into rings about 1cm thick.
  3. Separate all the sliced onion rings.
  4. In a bowl, combine 35g cake flour, 35g potato starch, 2g salt (1/3 tsp), 7 shakes garlic powder, 1 and 1/2 tsp mayonnaise, 7 shakes Aji-no-moto, and 4 shakes pepper. 【Tip!】 Mixing cake flour and potato starch creates a super crispy batter. Adding mayonnaise incorporates oil into the batter, which heats from within and helps maintain the crispy texture.
  5. Add 60cc Hokkaido Furano Hop Sparkling Water and mix well until the batter is thick. 【Tip!】 Adding sparkling water creates bubbles, resulting in an even crispier texture that lasts longer. The hop aroma transfers to the batter, making it pair wonderfully with highballs.
  6. Pour vegetable oil into a small frying pan until it covers the bottom by 1cm, then heat over medium-high heat.
  7. Coat the separated onion rings generously with the batter.
  8. Place the battered onion rings into the hot oil and fry until golden brown (fry about half the quantity at a time). 【Tip!】 The oil temperature will gradually rise, so adjust frying time while monitoring the color.
  9. Once beautifully golden, remove the onion rings and drain the excess oil. Fry the remaining onion rings similarly.
  10. Arrange the fried onion rings on a plate.
  11. Sprinkle Ajishio (seasoned salt) to taste as a finishing touch.
  12. Serve with ketchup, mayonnaise, or Pokka Lemon to taste.
