Ingredients

Main Ingredients (1 gratin dish serving)

  • 1 Egg
  • 120g All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 Bar Chocolate
  • 80ml Milk

Seasonings

  • 50-60g Granulated Sugar
  • 1 tsp Baking Powder
  • 2 tbsp Cocoa Powder
  • 3 tbsp Vegetable Oil
  • Powdered Sugar (to taste)

Steps

  1. Crack 1 Egg into a bowl and whisk until broken.
  2. Add 50-60g Granulated Sugar to the whisked egg and mix well until the sugar granules are no longer gritty.
  3. Add 80ml Milk and stir briefly until combined.
  4. Add 3 tbsp Vegetable Oil all at once and mix until incorporated.
  5. Sift 120g All-Purpose Flour, 2 tbsp Cocoa Powder, and 1 tsp Baking Powder into the bowl with the liquid ingredients. Mix with a whisk until no dry flour is visible.
  6. Prepare a heatproof gratin dish that fits in your frying pan.
  7. Pour half of the batter into the prepared gratin dish and spread lightly with a rubber spatula.
  8. Break 1 Bar Chocolate into pieces and arrange them on top of the batter.
  9. Pour the remaining batter over the chocolate and gently tap the gratin dish on the counter to remove air bubbles and even out the batter. [Tap gently to achieve a fine, smooth texture!]
  10. Add water to the frying pan to about one-third the height of the gratin dish and bring to a boil.
  11. Once the water is boiling, reduce heat to low, cover the frying pan with a lid, and steam.
  12. Once steamed, carefully remove the gratin dish using oven mitts or a spatula (beware of steam burns).
  13. Once slightly cooled, remove the steamed cake from the gratin dish.
  14. Cut the steamed cake into your desired pieces.
  15. Serve on a plate and sprinkle with Powdered Sugar if desired. Ready to enjoy!
