A super easy, no-measuring-required crispy onion ring recipe from Koutaro Kenta! The secret 'Twice Coating' technique, dipping in milk and flour twice, creates a perfectly crunchy texture just like from a restaurant. This is a simple recipe even for those who aren't confident with deep-frying.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients (2-3 servings)

  • Onion 1
  • All-purpose flour (as needed)
  • Milk (as needed)

Seasonings

  • Grated Cheese (approx. 1 tbsp)
  • Vegetable Oil (as needed)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • Ketchup (as needed)

Steps

  1. Slice one onion into 1cm thick rings.
  2. In a bowl, add all-purpose flour (as needed) and mix in grated cheese (approx. 1 tbsp) to your liking. [Secret Tip!] Instead of granulated umami seasoning, use grated cheese.
  3. Dip the sliced onion rings into milk (as needed) in a separate bowl.
  4. Take the milk-soaked onion rings and place them into the flour mixture. Roll them around with your index finger to coat them evenly with the flour.
  5. Dip the coated onion rings back into the milk, then coat them again in the flour mixture, rolling them around as before. [Secret Tip!] This is called the 'Twice Coating' technique, which creates a perfectly crispy and crunchy texture.
  6. Finish double-coating all the onion rings.
  7. Heat vegetable oil (as needed) in a pot over medium heat. [Secret Tip!] Test the oil temperature by dropping a small piece of onion ring (a 'tiny helper').
  8. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the coated onion rings and fry until crispy.
  9. Flip the onion rings when one side is golden brown and fry until the entire ring is a beautiful golden color.
  10. Fry all the onion rings in the same manner.
  11. Arrange the fried onion rings on a plate.
  12. Sprinkle with salt (to taste) and serve with ketchup (as needed).
