A super easy, no-measuring-required crispy onion ring recipe from Koutaro Kenta! The secret 'Twice Coating' technique, dipping in milk and flour twice, creates a perfectly crunchy texture just like from a restaurant. This is a simple recipe even for those who aren't confident with deep-frying.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients (2-3 servings)
- Onion 1
- All-purpose flour (as needed)
- Milk (as needed)
Seasonings
- Grated Cheese (approx. 1 tbsp)
- Vegetable Oil (as needed)
- Salt (to taste)
- Ketchup (as needed)
Steps
- Slice one onion into 1cm thick rings.
- In a bowl, add all-purpose flour (as needed) and mix in grated cheese (approx. 1 tbsp) to your liking. [Secret Tip!] Instead of granulated umami seasoning, use grated cheese.
- Dip the sliced onion rings into milk (as needed) in a separate bowl.
- Take the milk-soaked onion rings and place them into the flour mixture. Roll them around with your index finger to coat them evenly with the flour.
- Dip the coated onion rings back into the milk, then coat them again in the flour mixture, rolling them around as before. [Secret Tip!] This is called the 'Twice Coating' technique, which creates a perfectly crispy and crunchy texture.
- Finish double-coating all the onion rings.
- Heat vegetable oil (as needed) in a pot over medium heat. [Secret Tip!] Test the oil temperature by dropping a small piece of onion ring (a 'tiny helper').
- Once the oil is hot, carefully add the coated onion rings and fry until crispy.
- Flip the onion rings when one side is golden brown and fry until the entire ring is a beautiful golden color.
- Fry all the onion rings in the same manner.
- Arrange the fried onion rings on a plate.
- Sprinkle with salt (to taste) and serve with ketchup (as needed).
