These Nori Salt Yam Balls, made with just yam, have a wonderfully crispy exterior and a chewy interior that's incredibly addictive. They're perfect as a snack, side dish, or appetizer. Easily made with minimal oil for delicious results.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients (2 servings)

  • Yam 250g
  • Potato Starch 3 tbsp

Seasonings

  • Aonori (Dried Green Seaweed) 2 tsp
  • Dashi Powder 1 tsp
  • Sugar 1 tsp
  • Salt to taste
  • Pepper to taste

Steps

  1. Peel and cut 250g of yam into 2cm thick half-moon shapes.
  2. Place the yam in a microwave-safe container, cover with plastic wrap, and microwave for 5.5 minutes at 600W.
  3. Mash the yam with a fork or masher until it loses its shape.
  4. Add 2 tsp of Aonori (Dried Green Seaweed), 1 tsp of Dashi Powder, 1 tsp of Sugar, salt to taste, and pepper to taste to the mashed yam.
  5. Mix everything together.
  6. Add 3 tbsp of Potato Starch and mix further. [Key Tip!] If the mixture is too crumbly due to the yam's moisture content, adjust the amount of potato starch as needed.
  7. Once the ingredients are combined, shape them into balls about 1.5cm in diameter.
  8. Heat about 5mm to 1cm of Vegetable Oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
  9. Once the oil is hot, add the shaped yam balls. Roll them around to prevent sticking and fry until the entire surface is golden brown. [Key Tip!] Adding sugar and frying with minimal oil helps prevent bursting. Since there's little oil, they can easily stick to one spot. Keep an eye on them and roll them as needed to ensure even browning.
  10. Once evenly colored, remove from the pan and drain on paper towels.
  11. Once drained, arrange on a plate.
