A unique onion steak cooked using sliced onions as a mold. The sweet and sour sauce with green chili accents will whet your appetite. It's healthy yet satisfying as it's made with just vegetables. It's also delicious even when cold, making it perfect for bento boxes.

Ingredients

  • Onion 1 to 1.5
  • Carrot 20g
  • Eggs 2
  • Green Chili 1
  • All-purpose flour 3 tbsp
  • Potato Starch 1 tbsp

Seasonings

  • Chinese Five Spice 1/2 tsp
  • Toasted Sesame Oil (Taibai) 1 tbsp
  • [A] Sugar 5 tbsp
  • [A] Vinegar 6 tbsp
  • [A] Soy Sauce 1 tbsp
  • [A] Ketchup 3 tbsp
  • [A] Salt pinch
  • Sesame Oil 1 tbsp

Steps

  1. Finely chop the core of the onion and slice the outer part into 1.5cm thick rounds.
  2. Finely chop the carrot.
  3. In a bowl, combine the chopped onion, chopped carrot, and 1 egg, then mix well.
  4. Add another egg and mix well until it thickens.
  5. Add Chinese Five Spice 1/2 tsp and mix. (Key Tip! If you don't have Chinese Five Spice, add a small amount of your preferred spice like cinnamon).
  6. Add all-purpose flour 3 tbsp and Potato Starch 1 tbsp, and mix until the flour is no longer visible to create the batter.
  7. Finely chop the green chili. If you like it spicy, add 1 green chili to the batter and mix.
  8. Heat Toasted Sesame Oil (Taibai) 1 tbsp in a frying pan and spread it evenly.
  9. Arrange the sliced onions in the frying pan.
  10. Fill the centers of the onion rings with the prepared batter.
  11. Cover with a lid and cook over medium-low heat for 5 minutes.
  12. In a separate bowl, prepare the sauce ingredients. Combine Sugar 5 tbsp, Vinegar 6 tbsp, Soy Sauce 1 tbsp, Ketchup 3 tbsp, and a pinch of salt as [A], and mix well to create the sauce.
  13. After 5 minutes, flip the onion steaks and cook for another 5 minutes with the lid on.
  14. Arrange the cooked onion steaks on a plate.
  15. In the same frying pan used to cook the onion steaks, add the prepared [A] sauce and simmer slightly.
  16. Once the sauce thickens, add Sesame Oil 1 tbsp, stir to glaze, and remove from heat.
  17. Generously pour the hot sauce over the onion steaks on the plate.
  18. Optionally, sprinkle with more finely chopped green chili to finish. Enjoy!
