A budget-friendly and healthy tofu steak recipe. It has a satisfying texture like meat and is perfect as a snack, for bento boxes, or for dieting. This is an easy-to-make dish at home by simply pan-frying and simmering.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients (Serves 2-3)
- Silken Tofu 400g
- Potato Starch (as needed)
- Green Onion (as needed)
Seasonings
- [A] Soy Sauce 1.5 tbsp
- [A] Mirin (Sweet Rice Wine) 1.5 tbsp
- [A] Cooking Sake (Rice Wine) 2 tbsp
- [A] Sugar 1 tbsp
- [A] Vinegar 2 tsp
- Salted Butter 5g
- Sesame Oil 0.5 tbsp
Steps
- Wrap 400g Silken Tofu in paper towels, place on a tray, and put a weight (like a plastic bottle) on top to drain for 30 minutes to 1 hour. [Key Tip!] If you're short on time, you can drain the tofu by wrapping it in paper towels and microwaving on 600W for 2-3 minutes.
- Trim the root ends of 1 Green Onion, cut in half, align the cut ends, and finely chop.
- Remove the paper towels from the drained tofu and thoroughly pat dry with fresh paper towels.
- Prepare Potato Starch in a tray and evenly coat all sides of the cut tofu. Lightly shake off any excess starch.
- In a bowl, combine 1.5 tbsp Soy Sauce, 1.5 tbsp Mirin (Sweet Rice Wine), 2 tbsp Cooking Sake (Rice Wine), 1 tbsp Sugar, and 2 tsp Vinegar. Mix well until the sugar granules dissolve.
- Heat 0.5 tbsp Sesame Oil in a frying pan over medium heat for about 30 seconds.
- Pour the prepared sauce over the cooked tofu, and add 5g Salted Butter.
- Plate the tofu steak and top with the chopped green onion. It's ready to serve!
