An exquisite cheesy pork-wrapped okra dish that can be made in just 10 minutes using only the microwave. Okra wrapped in pork is coated with a sweet and savory Japanese-style sauce and melting cheese, making it a perfect dish for both rice and drinks. Using potato starch to thicken the sauce ensures a quick and delicious result.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients (2 servings)

  • Okra 6 pcs
  • Thinly Sliced Pork Loin 150-200g
  • Potato Starch (for dusting)
  • Melting Sliced Cheese 2 slices

Seasonings

  • Salt (a pinch)
  • [A] Soy Sauce 1 tbsp
  • [A] Mirin (Sweet Rice Wine) 1 tbsp
  • [A] Water 1 tbsp
  • [A] Sugar 1 tsp
  • Black Pepper (to taste)
  • Toasted Sesame Seeds (to taste)

Steps

  1. Trim about 3 millimeters off the stem ends of the okra. Use a knife to cut away the brown, bristly part at the base.
  2. Sprinkle a pinch of salt on the okra and rub it gently (itadazuri). Rinse briefly and place in a microwave-safe dish.
  3. Loosely cover the okra in the microwave-safe dish with plastic wrap and microwave on 600W for 1 minute. [Key Tip!] After microwaving, rinse with water and cool to maintain color and texture.
  4. Lightly dust the surface of the thinly sliced pork loin with potato starch.
  5. Wrap the prepared okra with the pork. If the pork slices are large, cut them in half.
  6. Once the pork is wrapped around the okra, lightly coat the entire piece with potato starch. [Key Tip!] Dusting with potato starch helps the pork stick together and thickens the sauce during cooking.
  7. Arrange the wrapped okra on a plate, seam-side down.
  8. In a separate container, combine 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp mirin (sweet rice wine), 1 tbsp water, and 1 tsp sugar. Mix well to create the sauce.
  9. Drizzle the prepared sauce over the pork-wrapped okra on the plate.
  10. Loosely cover with plastic wrap and microwave on 600W for 1 minute 30 seconds.
  11. After microwaving, when about half the pork is cooked, flip the pork rolls over.
  12. Remove the plastic wrap and microwave for an additional 1 minute 15 seconds on 600W to ensure the pork is cooked through.
  13. Once everything is cooked, toss the pork rolls in the sauce to coat.
  14. Plate the pork-wrapped okra.
  15. Top with your preferred cheese, such as melting sliced cheese, covering the entire surface.
  16. Microwave on 600W for about 1 minute 15 seconds, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  17. Finish with a sprinkle of coarsely ground black pepper and toasted sesame seeds to taste. Enjoy!
