A simple and delicious recipe for pork rolls made by wrapping thinly sliced pork around pickled ginger and grilling. The special sauce, based on Okonomiyaki sauce, is perfect with rice or as a snack. This home-style dish is easy to make with few ingredients and is also recommended for bento boxes.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients (2 servings)
- Thinly sliced pork 6 slices
- Potato Starch
- Pickled Ginger
Seasonings
- [A] Water 1 tbsp
- [A] Otafuku Sauce (Okonomiyaki Sauce) 2 tbsp
- [A] Grated Garlic 1 tsp
Steps
- In a bowl, combine 1 tbsp water, 2 tbsp Otafuku Sauce (Okonomiyaki Sauce), and 1 tsp grated garlic. Mix well.
- Lay out 6 slices of thinly sliced pork on a flat surface. Lightly dust one side with potato starch.
- Drain the pickled ginger and place it on the near edge of the thinly sliced pork.
- Tightly roll the pork from the near edge. (Key Tip! If using thicker pork, like for ginger pork, pounding it thin before rolling will help.
- Lightly coat the rolled pork all over with potato starch.
- Heat oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
- Once the pan is hot, place the pork rolls seam-side down and cook until the seam sticks and a nice brown crust forms.
- Flip the pork rolls and cook until browned on all sides.
- Once the pork is cooked through, wipe away any excess oil or debris from the pan with a paper towel.
- Stir the prepared sauce mixture again and pour it into the pan.
- Heat over medium to medium-high heat, allowing the sauce to thicken and coat the pork rolls as the liquid evaporates. (Key Tip! Dusting with potato starch and starting by searing the seam side helps the pork stick together and allows the sauce to cling better for a delicious finish.
- Once the sauce has coated everything, turn off the heat.
- Cut the pork rolls in half and arrange them on a plate. (Key Tip! Serving with shredded cabbage and mayonnaise is also delicious.
