An Western-style arrangement for mochi, often leftover from New Year's! Mochi Ham & Egg, ready in 10 minutes, is perfect for busy mornings. The chewy texture combined with egg and ham is an exquisite dish. Delicious with ketchup or mayonnaise.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients (1 serving)

  • Mochi 2 pieces
  • Green Onion 2 stalks
  • Egg 1
  • Ham 1 slice

Seasonings

  • Vegetable Oil (amount as needed)
  • Water 1 tbsp
  • Salt and Pepper (to taste)
  • Ketchup (to taste)
  • Mayonnaise (to taste)

Steps

  1. Cut the 2 pieces of mochi in half lengthwise, then slice into 5mm thick strips. (Key Tip!) Slice thinly so they cook through easily.
  2. Finely chop the 2 stalks of green onion into 3mm thick rounds.
  3. Heat the vegetable oil (amount as needed) in a frying pan over medium heat.
  4. Arrange the sliced mochi in the frying pan.
  5. Drizzle in 1 tbsp of water, cover with a lid, and steam until the mochi becomes soft.
  6. Once the mochi is soft, pour in the 1 beaten egg. (Key Tip!) Pouring in the egg helps the mochi and ham integrate into a cohesive mixture.
  7. Place the 1 slice of ham, cut in half, on top, leaving the center open.
  8. Cover again with the lid and steam until the egg is set.
  9. When the egg starts to set, flip the mixture over.
  10. Sprinkle the entire surface with salt and pepper (to taste) and cook over medium heat until browned.
  11. Once browned, place the chopped green onion in the center.
  12. Fold the mixture in half, aligning the open space created by the ham as the center.
  13. Transfer to a plate to complete the dish.
  14. Serve with ketchup or mayonnaise to your liking.
