A sweet and savory simmered dish using whole seasonal new potatoes. The richness and sheen from honey are irresistible, and they taste great even when cold, making them perfect for bento boxes or snacks. This fluffy and chewy exquisite side dish can be enjoyed by everyone from children to adults.

Ingredients

Main Ingredients (2-3 servings)

  • Small New Potatoes 400g

Seasonings

  • Vegetable Oil 2 tbsp
  • White Sesame Seeds 1 tsp
  • [A] Water 1 cup
  • [A] Soy Sauce 3 tbsp
  • [A] Sugar 1 tbsp
  • [A] Cooking Sake (Rice Wine) 1 tbsp
  • [A] Honey 2 tbsp
  • [A] Garlic 1 clove
  • [A] Black Peppercorns 20

Steps

  1. Wash 400g of small new potatoes thoroughly to remove any dirt.
  2. While still moist from washing, heat the new potatoes in the microwave until tender. They are ready when a skewer passes through them easily.
  3. Crush 1 clove of garlic.
  4. Heat 2 tbsp of vegetable oil in a frying pan. Wipe the moisture off the heated new potatoes and sauté them until they are lightly browned and fragrant.
  5. Add 1 cup of water, 1 tbsp of sugar, 3 tbsp of soy sauce, 1 tbsp of cooking sake (rice wine), 2 tbsp of honey, the crushed 1 clove of garlic, and 20 black peppercorns to the frying pan and reduce the liquid. (Key tip!) Adding both sugar and honey enhances richness and sheen.
  6. Simmer until the potatoes are well-infused with flavor and the sauce has thickened.
  7. Transfer to a serving dish, generously spoon over the remaining sauce, and sprinkle with 1 tsp of white sesame seeds to finish. (Key tip!) Letting them sit overnight makes the potatoes even chewier and they taste great cold, perfect for bento boxes or snacks.
