Steps
- Trim about 3 millimeters off the stem ends of the okra. Use a knife to cut away the brown, bristly part at the base.
- Sprinkle a pinch of salt on the okra and rub it gently (itadazuri). Rinse briefly and place in a microwave-safe dish.
- Loosely cover the okra in the microwave-safe dish with plastic wrap and microwave on 600W for 1 minute. [Key Tip!] After microwaving, rinse with water and cool to maintain color and texture.
- Lightly dust the surface of the thinly sliced pork loin with potato starch.
- Wrap the prepared okra with the pork. If the pork slices are large, cut them in half.
- Once the pork is wrapped around the okra, lightly coat the entire piece with potato starch. [Key Tip!] Dusting with potato starch helps the pork stick together and thickens the sauce during cooking.
- Arrange the wrapped okra on a plate, seam-side down.
- In a separate container, combine 1 tbsp soy sauce, 1 tbsp mirin (sweet rice wine), 1 tbsp water, and 1 tsp sugar. Mix well to create the sauce.
- Drizzle the prepared sauce over the pork-wrapped okra on the plate.
- Loosely cover with plastic wrap and microwave on 600W for 1 minute 30 seconds.
- After microwaving, when about half the pork is cooked, flip the pork rolls over.
- Remove the plastic wrap and microwave for an additional 1 minute 15 seconds on 600W to ensure the pork is cooked through.
- Once everything is cooked, toss the pork rolls in the sauce to coat.
- Plate the pork-wrapped okra.
- Top with your preferred cheese, such as melting sliced cheese, covering the entire surface.
- Microwave on 600W for about 1 minute 15 seconds, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
