A simple and quick dish combining easy-to-prepare fried tofu with melty cheese and seasonal perilla leaves. The aromatic perilla and gooey cheese are incredibly appetizing, making this a perfect budget-friendly and time-saving snack.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients (2 servings)
- Atsuage (Thick Fried Tofu) 2 pieces
- Sliced Cheese 2 slices
- Perilla Leaves 4 leaves
- Potato Starch (to coat)
Seasonings
- Vegetable Oil (for frying)
- Yakiniku Sauce (Grilled Meat Sauce) 2 tbsp
Steps
- Cut Atsuage (Thick Fried Tofu) into 2 pieces in half and make slits on the cut surface.
- Cut Sliced Cheese into 2 slices in half.
- Fold the cut sliced cheese into thirds and insert into the slits of the atsuage.
- Trim the stems from 4 Perilla Leaves and lightly coat the surface with Potato Starch.
- With the starch-coated side facing outwards, cover the cheese-stuffed atsuage with the perilla leaves, ensuring the coated side faces out.
- Heat Vegetable Oil in a frying pan over medium heat.
- Place the atsuage, perilla-side down, in the pan. (Key Tip!) Ensure the atsuage and perilla are pressed firmly together to prevent the cheese from leaking out.
- Once the cut surface is sealed, lay the atsuage on its side and cook until golden brown. Gently wrap the perilla around the atsuage, being careful not to burn it.
- Cook until the entire surface is browned and the perilla leaves are firmly adhered to the atsuage, then turn off the heat.
- Add Yakiniku Sauce (Grilled Meat Sauce) 2 tbsp and cook over medium heat, coating the atsuage with the sauce.
- Once the sauce has coated the atsuage, turn off the heat.
- To serve, cut into bite-sized pieces if desired and arrange on a plate. (Key Tip!) If the cheese hardens when cooled, reheat in the microwave.
