An easy and budget-friendly skewer recipe using inexpensive thinly sliced pork. Made with just one frying pan, it's grilled and coated in a sweet and savory sauce, making it as exquisite as yakitori. Perfect for bento boxes or snacks, and it pairs wonderfully with rice. The result is moist and tender.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients (2 servings)
- Thinly sliced pork 200g
- Potato Starch 1 tbsp
- Potato Starch (for dusting) as needed
Seasonings
- Cooking Sake (Rice Wine) 1 tbsp
- Salt and pepper to taste
- [A] Mirin (Sweet Rice Wine) 1 tbsp
- [A] Soy Sauce 1 tbsp
- [A] Sugar 2 tsp
- Vegetable Oil as needed
Steps
- In a bowl, combine Mirin (Sweet Rice Wine) 1 tbsp, Soy Sauce 1 tbsp, and Sugar 2 tsp. Mix well to create the sauce.
- In a separate bowl, add Thinly sliced pork 200g, Cooking Sake (Rice Wine) 1 tbsp, Potato Starch 1 tbsp, and Salt and pepper to taste. Knead well to coat the pork. (Key Tip!) Kneading the seasonings and potato starch will make the meat tender and easier to shape.
- Divide the seasoned pork into 6 portions. Thread them onto bamboo skewers, carefully winding the meat around to ensure it holds its shape.
- Evenly dust the surface of the skewered pork with Potato Starch (for dusting) as needed. (Key Tip!) Dusting with potato starch increases moisture retention, making the meat even more tender and helping the sauce to adhere better.
- Heat Vegetable Oil as needed in a frying pan over medium heat. Arrange the skewered pork in the pan.
- Brown the pork on all sides, turning as needed, and cook for about 5 minutes until the pork is cooked through.
- Once the pork is cooked, wipe off any excess oil from the frying pan with a paper towel.
- Pour the prepared sauce into the frying pan. Increase heat to medium-high and cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens and coats the pork.
- When the sauce has thickened and is well coated on the pork, turn off the heat. Transfer to a plate and serve.
