This Chikuwa and Green Pepper Stir-Fry is a budget-friendly dish that can be easily made in just 10 minutes. It's perfect as an extra side dish for your bento box or when you need a quick addition to your meal. We'll also share tips on how to add richness with honey and reduce bitterness by how you cut the green peppers.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients (2-3 servings)
- Green Peppers 4
- Chikuwa (Fish Cakes) 3
- Bonito Flakes (Katsuobushi) 3g
- White Sesame Seeds 1 tbsp
Seasonings
- Soy Sauce 2 tsp
- Cooking Sake (Rice Wine) 2 tsp
- Honey 1 tsp
- Sesame Oil 1/2 tbsp
Steps
- Wash the Green Peppers and pat them dry.
- Push the stem of the Green Peppers inward with your thumb to remove it.
- Cut the Green Peppers in half and remove the seeds.
- If desired, remove the white pith from the Green Peppers. (Key Tip!) Removing the pith helps reduce bitterness, making the dish more delicious.
- Thinly slice the Green Peppers into 5-7mm strips along the grain. (Key Tip!) Slicing along the grain helps to reduce bitterness. If you prefer a more bitter taste, slice against the grain.
- Slice the 3 Chikuwa (Fish Cakes) into 1cm thick rounds. (Key Tip!) You can cut them into rounds or diagonally.
- Heat 1/2 tbsp Sesame Oil in a frying pan over medium heat for about 20 seconds.
- Add the sliced 4 Green Peppers and 2 tsp Cooking Sake (Rice Wine) to the heated pan and stir-fry for about 1 minute.
- Add the sliced 3 Chikuwa (Fish Cakes) and stir-fry until the Green Peppers become tender.
- Add 1 tsp Honey and mix well. (Key Tip!) Adding sweetness at the beginning helps develop richness.
- Add the 3g Bonito Flakes (Katsuobushi) and 1 tbsp White Sesame Seeds and mix to combine.
- Drizzle with 2 tsp Soy Sauce, stir-fry briefly, and serve.
