This recipe for Gyudon features a slightly sweet seasoning with a hint of ginger. Enjoy the classic, rice-complementing flavor of simmered beef and onions, easily recreated at home. Adjusting the heat and simmering time can be observed in the video.
Ingredients
Main Ingredients (2 servings)
- Beef 250g
- Onion 150g
- Ginger 1 small piece (approx. 10g)
Seasonings
- [A] Soy Sauce 4 tbsp
- [A] Mirin (Sweet Rice Wine) 1/4 cup (50ml)
- [A] Cooking Sake (Rice Wine) 1/4 cup (50ml)
- [A] Sugar 3 tbsp
Steps
- Slice the onion in half and then into 1cm thick wedges.
- Peel the ginger and cut it into thin strips.
- In a pot, combine 200ml water, 4 tbsp soy sauce, 50ml mirin (sweet rice wine), 50ml cooking sake (rice wine), and 3 tbsp sugar.
- Lightly stir the seasonings to dissolve, then add the sliced ginger and onions to the pot.
- Place the pot over medium heat and bring to a boil.
- Once the liquid is boiling, add the 250g beef.
- Use chopsticks to gently separate the beef and wait for it to come back to a boil.
- Once boiling, skim off any scum that rises to the surface, then reduce the heat and simmer for 20 minutes.
- After 20 minutes of simmering, the liquid will reduce to less than half.
- Turn off the heat and place the simmered Gyudon topping over hot rice.
