Ingredients
Main Ingredients (2 servings)
- Lettuce 1/2 head (approx. 200g)
- Onion (to taste)
Seasonings
- [A] Mayonnaise 2-3 tbsp
- [A] Grated Onion 2 tbsp
- [A] Sugar 1 tsp
- [A] Vinegar 1 tbsp
- [A] Vegetable Oil 1 tbsp
- Soy Sauce 2 tsp (or to taste)
- Coarsely Ground Black Pepper (to taste)
Steps
- Grate the onion. (The Trick!) Grating in a circular motion makes it milder.
- Microwave the grated onion and let it cool. (The Trick!) Microwaving removes the pungent smell and brings out the sweetness.
- Remove the core from the lettuce. (The Trick!) Push the core firmly and twist to remove it easily.
- Cut the lettuce in half and then into bite-sized pieces.
- Place a damp paper towel over the cut lettuce. (The Trick!) Tossing with the dressing just before serving keeps the lettuce crisp.
- In a bowl, combine 2 tbsp grated onion (cooled), 2-3 tbsp mayonnaise, 1 tsp sugar, 1 tbsp vinegar, and 1 tbsp vegetable oil. Mix well. (The Trick!) This onion makes the dressing taste authentic.
- Thoroughly pat dry the lettuce that has been taken out of the refrigerator.
- Toss the lettuce well with the dressing.
- Just before serving, add 2 tsp soy sauce (or to taste) to enhance the flavor. (The Trick!) Adding soy sauce from the beginning can cause the lettuce to release too much water and become soggy, so add it at the end.
- Plate the salad.
- Sprinkle with coarsely ground black pepper, if desired.
- It's also delicious with added grain mustard or capers.
